Mokumboot tugboat on the Amstel near the Magere Brug

From the station to the Amstel

The cruise starts at Amsterdam Central Station, designed by Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum. You soon pass De Sluyswacht, the crooked lock keeper's house that is now a café, and Waterlooplein with its market.

Then you sail under the Magere Brug, Amsterdam's best-known drawbridge. From here the skipper follows the Herengracht, past grand canal houses and the Willet-Holthuysen Museum.

Through the canal ring back to the station

You pass the House with the Columns, the official residence of the mayor, and head towards the Heineken Brewery and Leidseplein. Via the Nine Streets you reach the Leliegracht, where the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht cross. On the Prinsengracht you see the Westertoren and the Westerkerk.

The last stretch passes the Nieuwe Haarlemmersluis lock, before you arrive back at Central Station. The whole route lies in the canal ring, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2010. Along the way the skipper tells you about what you see, in English and Dutch.
